Mrs Gitte Thybo Pihl from Sygehus Lillebaelt, one of the Danish partners in the PROMETHEUS project, attended an international workshop in London organized by the European Association for Communication in Health systems (EACH). She had been invited to present a poster developed in the project:  “The use of digital devices in the coaching of patients – a pilot study.” Among others, the study explored the question of more personal relations between doctors and patients and a less formal discourse. It wanted to find out whether these changes could improve patients’ motivation and ability to engage in a more active role.

The many and various reactions of participants from all over Europe, the USA and Australia, proved the relevance of the topic. The communication between doctors and patients is largely determined by one parameter – namely how formalized the relation between them is. Individual conversations at the meeting showed the fact that research on this topic is going on in a number of countries and with different perspectives. We established closer contact with a group of Belgian researchers, who are working on improving nurses’ competence in engaging conversations. The nurses are to be enabled to support and help the chronically ill in dealing with their illness. We propose intensifying and extending the exchange of professional expertise with our Belgian colleagues, because it will benefit the PROMETHEUS project – it is our shared aim to encourage and support patients to become more active and independent.
